Significant restrictions on Ukrainian deep-sea ports operations on the Black Sea by the Russian Federation and the need to establish new logistics channels contributed to the rapid development of ports in the Danube region.

How the port of Reni develops during the war and the blockade of the ports of Odessa

In order to ensure exports, domestic companies seek to have their own facilities for goods storage and transshipment in the region. According to the Minister of Infrastructure, Oleksandr Kubrakov, about 20 new terminals started working on the Danube during the last year. Also 12 terminals are being built along the Ukrainian coast of the Danube.

All the companies that worked on the big water moved to the Danube. Among them are top multinational traders such as Kernel, Cofco, Bunge and others. And also large Ukrainian companies such as "Prometheus", "Prime" etc. The Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company, Asket-Shipping, Danube Logistics Group, and Nibulon are also developing the river infrastructure.

Before the full-scale invasion, the rental price in the port of Reni was 48 hryvnias per square meter, and during the war it reached 467 hryvnias per square meter.

According to the operational data, which are at the disposal of the Center of Transport Strategies, Ukrainian ports on the Danube processed 14 million tons of cargo during the first half of the 2023.

Taking into account the fact that during this period transshipment in Izmail reached 9 million tons, the Reni figure should approach 5 million tons. So, only in May, 1 million tons of cargo was processed in Reni, which became a record for the entire history of the enterprise. During the month, 391 vessels were processed, of which 134 were sea vessels and 257 were river vessels, according to the CTS.

Currently, a lot of work is going on in the port to repair berths and dredging. The construction of floor storage warehouses is actively developing, both in the port itself and outside its territory. Among the major projects is also the construction of a terminal for bulk and grain cargoes of the Kernel company.
