Polish and Ukrainian railways have agreed on joint work on the development of passenger and freight rail transport between the countries in order to increase the export-import potential.

This is the first agreement of this level between the railways of the two countries since 1994, said Yevhen Lyashchenko, chairman of the board of Ukrzaliznytsya (Ukrainian Railway).
Polish railways will work out measures for concluding separate agreements with UZ in the field of railway infrastructure management, cargo and passenger rail transportation. The parties will also form joint working groups for the purpose of developing projects for separate agreements.
One of the principles of the agreement is the parties' provision of safe and uninterrupted transportation of passengers and cargo.
In addition, the parties agreed that it will be possible to reload the cargo into wagons for tracks of a different width or to rearrange the wagons on a track of a different width not only on the side of the carrier, which receives the cargo at the border station in its state, but also such operations can be carried out by the carrier who hands over the cargo at the border station on the territory of his state (after an appropriate approval).
Locomotive train service between border stations for freight traffic in both directions will be carried out by locomotives and locomotive crews of JSC UZ and PKP S.A. with 50/50 parity.
"We are taking another step towards strengthening the partnership and development of rail transportation between Ukraine and Poland. Together, we will continue to develop border infrastructure and increase passenger and cargo traffic between our countries, which will ultimately have a positive effect on our railways and the national economies of Ukraine and Poland," Ukrainian Railway representative said.
